Our weekly series looks at hidden gems on PC. This week Alice tells us why she loves QUBE 2, or, if you want to be pedantic about it, Q.U.B.E. 2. It stands for Quick Understanding of Block Extrusion, and is a fun puzzle game along the lines of Portal. Here’s why we think QUBE 2 is a hidden gem.
There are so many hidden gems on PC, cult classics waiting to be discovered. In our You Should Be Playing series we pick one game a week and explain why it resonated with us. QUBE 2 is a game set in a series of abstract puzzle rooms, with only strange VO to guide you and a bizarre, almost alien-like tech to help you solve them. To say that it’s a bit like Portal is an understatement, but with Valve not making any more Portal for the time being, we’ll take any Portal-likes we can get our hands on.
In this QUBE 2 gameplay you’ll see how magic loves manipulate the building blocks of the world around you, gradually bringing you closer to freedom (maybe) and the truth of your strange prison. Different blocks serve different roles in the puzzles, and it’s all about stitching their behaviour into long sequences that send you bouncing and catapulting around the rooms. It makes more sense if you watch the video.
But hey, I’m only repeating what Alice already explains in the video. Watch that instead and within nine minutes I guarantee you’ll be asking yourself ‘why am I not playing Q.U.B.E. 2?’ Hopefully you’ll find Alice’s QUBE 2 impressions useful - if you have any more questions about the game, pop them in the comments and we’ll try to answer them.
